No do0da hasn't officially lost it.. yet. BUT he just caught sniff of the whole LHC hype going on and its fun watching ppl go crazy over something that and i quote, had the total physical destruction of the planet on the list of direct consequences of getting things wrong. dare i say SWEET =p
LHC ( Large Hardon Collider ) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator complex. Yup wiki is useful. In other words they're sorta trying to replicate the big bang and create mass. Basically another chance for men in white to try and play god.
So if you think they really are gonna botch it up and kill us all heres some good advice from gizmodo after it was announced the actual test won't happen for another two months : you can think about it as another extension to your life. In other words: You have two more months to find Uma Thurman/Brad Pitt/Richard Simmons and 1) convince her/him/it that the world is going to end and 2) you are the best lay there is to have before that happens.
Good luck ppl and now to go find a fancy LHC countdown woohoo !

it's not a recreation of the big bang and they are not trying to create another universe. what they are doing is this,
"..recreating the conditions and energies that existed shortly after the start of the Big Bang, not the moment at which the Big Bang started"
and beside that, the LHC doesn't have enough energy to blow the whole planet up!

yea the actual thing might not blow it up but theyr saying if they get a calculation wrong u never knw what might happen. But theres a tiny practically non-existent chance of that happening.
From what i get is, theyr doing it cause it will help us understand matter more. Basically in a few years after this you'll have one more chapter to study in chem class
